Department of LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE

Introduction

Information has become an integral part of all aspects in modern-day life and in the knowledge society. It is a significant determinant of social, economic and cultural growth in all sectors of life. Therefore, acquiring the necessary skills for the effective utilization of information and information sources is imperative for every knowledge worker - from the highest level of governmental decision-making to the lowest decision-making individual entrepreneur. The faculty of the Department of Library and Information Science fulfils this responsibility by educating men and women at bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels to become leaders in libraries, archives, and information/knowledge centers; conducting research to advance the information sciences; and performing public service to support the information professions and the public good. “Our mission is to Create New Frontiers of Knowledge in Quest for Development of society”.

The Department of Library and Information Science was established in 2018 in the University Campus. The program was introduced by the University, as Mr. Sudarshan took charge as Librarian and Head, Department of Library Science. He brought with him a rich and varied experience of Library Science Education and Library Services. From the session 2018-19, the Department started the B. Lib.ISc. AndM.Lib.ISc. Program in Library Science. It also Started Ph. D. Program in 2022, the Department was shifted from the ground floor to the first floor of the G- Block in the University Campus. The Department has a library, Reading room and IT laboratory.

Bachelor of Library and Information Science

PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEOs)

PEO1- Graduates should be trained in advanced techniques related to information storage, processing, and retrieval. This includes understanding various methods for organizing and managing information resources.

PEO2- Graduates should be able to plan and organize information services in specialized fields.

PEO3- Graduates should be equipped with research skills, including methods, techniques, and tools for carrying out research projects related to library and information science.

PEO4- Graduates should have a thorough understanding of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and their application in providing state-of-the-art library services. This includes using technology for managing libraries and adapting to changing user requirements in the digital era.

PSO1- Enabling the students to understand the role of Libraries and Information Centers in socio-economic development of the society.

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES (POs)

PO1- Disciplinary knowledge:Capable of demonstrating comprehensive knowledge and understanding of major concepts,principles,the ories and laws of various subjects in Library andInformationScience.

PO2- Professional skills: : Ability to understand and classify simple, compound and complex documents using standard classification schemes; capability tocatalogue all types of documents using standard catalogue codes and metadata standards; ability to carry out library housekeeping operations andto provide library and information services by standard procedures.

PO3- Critical thinking/Development of solutions: Capability to critically analyze subjects of documents to classify them properly and to derive subjectheadings for subject cataloguing, indexing purposes and ability to think critically for solving various problems pertaining to the management of Libraries and Information Centers.

PO4- Ethics: Capable of demonstrating the ability to identify ethical issues related with Intellectual Property Rights while providing library services and able to understand basic philosophy and ethics of librarianship to make the mconscientious librarians

PO5- Modern tool usage: Understanding of concepts of information technology and its application to libraries and capable of using digital technology for communication purpose,for library housekeeping operations,and for searching informationfrom OPAC,Internet and online databases.

PO6- Communication :Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms with users,Colleague’s and authorities in an effective manner.

PEO2- Develop broad and balanced knowledge and understanding of fundamental concepts, principles, and theories related to Library and Information Science.

PEO3- Train students in advanced skills related to information/knowledge gathering, processing, organization, and retrieval.

PEO4- Include managerial skills for planning and managing Libraries and Information Centers (LICs).

PSO1- 1. Graduates should find placements in public, academic, corporate, and special libraries both in India and abroad.

PSO2- 2. Graduates must communicate adeptly with diverse stakeholders, promoting not only access to information but also its effective utilization in specific contexts.
